It is very difficult to make sure that you have all the tourist attractions in California covered. The great variety that this west coastal state of US offers makes it difficult to be confident about your travel plans.
You might return home and then think that you should have checked out that place which you gave up on while in California. Here, we won’t talk about the usual tourist attractions of California, because you may already be aware of them. We will talk about some little-known places that are just as interesting to visit as the biggies you know about.
Fisherman’s Wharf
A lot of people miss out on this one, especially people who don’t visit Alcatraz. The Fisherman’s Wharf is the point from where you take a ferry out to Alcatraz. However, the place has its own unique charm. There is a long line of seafood eateries here for the gastronomy fans and there are many souvenir stores from where you could take some California memories back home.
But what might interest you the most is the large number of performers who display their skills right on the street. There’s also a mall called Pier 39 which for some reason is a favorite haunt for hundreds of sea-lions. Catch them in action here.
Winchester Mystery House
This is a place of much tourist interest in California, located in San Jose. Actually, it is an unfinished house but still has about 160 rooms. There are strange things in this house – there are stairs that go nowhere, there are motifs like the number 13 prominently displayed, there is a kitchen sink with 13 holes and so on. Get ready to get spooked in this mysterious house.
Napa and Sonoma Valley
Very few people head out here, and most that do are wine enthusiasts. This place has some of the best wineries in the world. You could check out how wine is made in the various wineries you will find here. If it is the season, you will see the place verdant with grapes hanging from the vines ready to be plucked. The best part, of course, is that the people will be only too happy to give you a taste of the wine.
Big Sur Coastal Highway
This is a short experience, but one that will leave warm memories. The Big Sur coastal highway is one the most brazen highways in the world because of its sharp bends and rugged cliff face on one side. If you want to prolong your drive on this highway, visit the historically interesting towns of Monterey and Carmel that you will see on the way. You could also lunch in one of the various seafood restaurants you will find dotting the coastline.
